Category exclusivity means the organization agrees not to sell the same type of sponsorship to another business in your defined category during the agreed period. It can matter when a sponsor wants to avoid appearing beside a direct competitor.
Exclusivity should never be assumed. It should be stated clearly in the sponsorship terms.
Define the category
A category can be narrow or broad. For example, "one dentist" is clearer than "health services." "One local pizza restaurant" is clearer than "food." The broader the category, the more likely the sponsor and organization may need to discuss exceptions.
Ask what is included
Ask these questions before you pay more for exclusivity.
- What exact category is exclusive?
- How long does the exclusivity last?
- Does it apply to the whole event, a specific package, a season, or a website placement?
- Are current sponsors or existing partners excluded from the term?
- Does it cover only paid sponsors, or also donated products and prizes?
- What happens if another business in the category is added by mistake?
Consider the value
Exclusivity may be useful when the package is visible and your business category is competitive. It may matter less when the placement is small or when the audience has little reason to compare businesses at that time.
The value comes from the written terms and the actual placement. It is not a benefit by itself.
